1,000 bicyclists expected at annual Tour de Tempe bike ride

More than 1,000 people are expected to participate in the 16th annual Tour de Tempe community bike ride on Sunday, Oct. 23 from 7:30 – 11 a.m. at Kiwanis Park, 6111 S. All America Way in the west parking lot north of Guadalupe Road.

This free 10-mile bike ride is led by Mayor Hugh Hallman and members of the Tempe City Council. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. with the ride starting at 9 a.m. Register the day of the event or fill out a registration form online at www.tempe.gov/tim/events.

“The Tour de Tempe is a great way to meet your neighbors while enjoying the various bike amenities Tempe has to offer” said Eric Iwersen the 2011 Tempe Bike Hero Award recipient. “Tempe has a long history of supporting bicycling by helping to create a sustainable, creative, and vibrant Tempe.”

Free t-shirts will be available for the first 850 riders and helmets are required. Breakfast foods and coffee will be provided by Wildflower Bread Company, Whole Foods, Sunflower Farmers Market, Back East Bagels and Starbucks. Please bring your own water.

The Bicycle Cellar, Tempe Bicycle, Global Bikes, REI, Phoenix Phreaks Bike Group and Urban Commuter will be on hand to provide bike demonstrations, safety tips, bike rodeos and bike tune-ups.
